How a Holistic Sleep Consultant Can Help Your Family

It's hard to be the parent and partner you want to be when you're suffering from sleep deprivation.

Shortly after becoming a parent you recognize how important sleep is to your everyday life. When you are suffering from sleep deprivation, it is very difficult to be the parent and partner you want to be. Relationships can suffer, it can take a toll on your mental health and getting through the day can seem daunting. We all need sleep and we all know how important sleep is to function in our day-to-day life. But what happens when your family isn’t getting the sleep they need? The right sleep consultant can help.

What is a holistic infant and child sleep consultant?

A holistic sleep consultant (SC) is someone who has studied infant and child sleep and works side-by-side with families in person or over the phone/skype, along with email support, to teach them how to help their little ones get the sleep they need.

Taking a holistic approach towards sleep ensures that we are determining the root cause of any sleep challenges that may be occurring. A full investigation into the child’s history, including the birth and three days of 24-hour sleep and food logs, provides us the information needed to move forward with a plan that is geared specifically for that particular child and their temperament. This information also helps the SC learn more about the family dynamics while ensuring the emotional wellbeing of the family as a whole.

Here at Restful Parenting, Elisa Costanza-Reyes and I make working with the family's goals and parenting style our top priority: We strive to empower our clients to change the way their family sleeps!

Working with families to help their child get the recommended hours of sleep, sleeping through the night (age appropriately) and teaching them how to fall asleep independently are some of the ways we help. However, we know that not every family is ready to teach their child to fall asleep independently as some enjoy the co-sleeping, bed sharing relationship, which is a parenting style we also support.

Our focus is to make sure that the child is handling each and every step along the way. An emotion-based approach helps prepare the child for each new change, and parents are encouraged to respond and attend to their child at all times – this is not a cry-it-out approach.

Working with the individual family allows us to customize a plan that is created by combining techniques and methods that will lead to success. Every family and child is different so each plan is customized based on the family’s goals and the child’s temperament. We know that for sleep coaching to be successful, the parents have to be comfortable with every aspect of the plan to ensure they will follow through with it.

Although sleep consultants have only recently started to become known across Canada, please know that if you and your family are struggling with sleep challenges, you are not alone and there is help available.
