Did you know that the average clothing item today is only worn seven to fifteen times before it’s discarded? In a world dominated by fast fashion and trends that quickly come and go, it can be easy to overlook the importance of garments like heirloom pieces, handmade gifts, and hand-me-downs. These items not only carry sentimental value, but are also an antidote to the wastefulness and ethical costs of fast fashion. However, preserving these treasures requires special care, as conventional laundry methods can cause damage or wear over time.

The Problem of Fast Fashion: A Snapshot

Fast fashion has taken over the clothing industry, enticing consumers with its low prices and constantly changing trends. But the environmental and human cost of this convenience is staggering—according to the UN, the fashion industry is the second-largest source of water consumption in the world and accounts for up to 10 percent of our global emissions. Around a quarter of new garments are never even sold, contributing to the millions of tons of clothing that are discarded each year. Most of this ends up in our waterways and landfills, where synthetic fibres (a hallmark of fast fashion) can take between 20 to 200 years to decompose.

The Timeless Value of Heirloom Garments

To shift away from today’s cycle of overconsumption and waste, we can instead look to the past, preserving and valuing items we already own that hold sentimental value. This shift is not only more ethical but can also instil the importance of a “quality over quantity” mindset for our children.

Unlike fast fashion, clothing made with love and care is often designed to withstand the test of time and crafted with more natural fibres too. Preserving such textiles further preserves priceless memories and family traditions; imagine the joy of one day passing down a pair of cherished baby booties or your cosiest rainy day sweater, along with the years of stories it holds.

Practical Tips for Preserving Common Heirloom Textiles

Caring for such treasured garments requires attention to extend their lifespan, whether they’re worn every day or carefully tucked away in storage. Here are a few care tips to consider:

  • Wool: Avoid the dryer at all costs (if you’ve ever mourned a garment shrunk into doll-sized proportions, you know) and use the delicate cycle on your machine or hand wash with a natural conditioning agent.

A gentle detergent featuring lanolin, an oil secreted from sheep’s skin, will be especially effective at softening and re-conditioning wool–it even doubles as a waterproofing agent. As wool fibre is particularly sensitive to changes in temperature, which can cause felting and shrinkage, using a no-rinse method is ideal to minimise damage during the washing process.

  • Lace: Delicate lace can easily tear or yellow with time. It’s best to hand wash these items with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent and avoid excessive wringing. Air-dry flat to maintain shape.

  • Hand-embroidered fabrics: These often have delicate thread work that can be damaged easily by standard machine washing. Instead, hand wash using a gentle detergent and avoiding scrubbing and friction on the embroidered areas.
  • Silk: While strong, silk fibres are vulnerable to damage from the harshness of everyday detergents and laundry machines. Hand washing silk in cold water with a gentle detergent is a must, as heat can cause dyes to bleed. Hang the garment to dry away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
